MATCH REPORTS -
19 September 2010
Brad Hill came 2nd at the ESAA National Combined Events Championships this weekend with a PB score of 2875 pts. Full results are now up on the ESAA website.
As is normal not every event went according to plan, and Brad was well below his PB in Hurdles & Shot, but got new PB’s in LJ & 800m. Brad just misses out on the Club record of 2976pts held by Andrew Machin who won this competition back in 2004.
Brad will now represent England Schools at the home international in Dec. A fantastic achievement for an athlete who was primarily focused on Long Jump at the beginning of the season!
Hannah Claydon also competed, but carrying an injury was not at her best and finished 34th.
Big congrats to both Hannah & Brad for making it to these finals.

We ended our season in a blaze of glory as records tumbled and the team triumphed in their Wessex league match in Bournemouth on Sunday.
Taking pride of place was Brad Hill, 14, who became the fastest in the country in his age group when he ran his 80m hurdles race in 11.3secs, breaking the club and league record. The feat was all the more remarkable in that he has hurdled competitively only a handful of times.
Hill’s club record was one of seven to fall during the event, which saw MADJA come first out of the seven teams, with 598 points, ahead of Basingstoke and Mid Hants (543.5 points) and Camberley (405.5). The win put MADJA seventh out of 19 in final Wessex league table, ahead of clubs from much bigger towns such as Basingstoke, Slough and Portsmouth.
The other athletes who broke club records were Luke Callaghan (U15 400m and 1500m), Josh Eades (U20 100m and 200m), Chris Claydon (U20 discus) and the U15 4x100m team of Matthew Williams, Callaghan, Joe Williamson and Hill.
MADJA’s main successes came in the U13 and U15 boys teams, who both finished second overall in the league. In Sunday’s match, U13 Peter Booten came first in the javelin with a throw of 33.03m and second in both the 200m (28.6secs) and long jump (4.54m).
Teammate Henry Williams came first in both the shot put and the discus, with throws of 8.26m and 25.05m respectively. Williams and Booten combined with Alex Davies and Jamie Cooper to win the 4x100m relay.
Williams’ brother Matthew was second in the U15 high jump, clearing 1.65m.
In the U13 girls competition, Eve Tarring was first in the 70m hurdles in a time of 12.9secs, helping MADJA to a tally of seven wins out of the day’s 12 hurdles races. Gemma Shepherd was narrowly beaten into second in the U13 800m in a time of 2:32.0.
In the U15 girls, Amy Cooper emerged with a trio of seconds: in the 300m (46.2secs), 1500m (5:07.5) and 75m hurdles (12.9secs). Georgina Cooper came second in the shot put (8.29m) and Lydia Borwell second in the javelin (21.08m).
Morgan Gascoigne picked up a double first in the U17 competition, in the 200m (27.2secs) and the long jump (5.01m), while Emily Humphries won in the 80m hurdles (13.7secs) and Rachel Sykes won the shot put with a throw of 7.03m.
In the parallel QuadKids event for athletes under 11, seven boys and four girls from
MADJA competed, with Jacob Smith and Harriet Hanscomb-
Of the overall team performance, MADJA chairman Richard Cooper said: “The standard has been very high this season. As a small town club, we punch well above our weight, and have some of the best athletes in the league.”
While the club’s league season is over, we have one final fixture – a club competition on Sunday September 5 – all welcome at the Marlborough College Track.

MADJA runner Gemma Shepherd knocked two seconds off her 1200m club record at the
Wessex league match at Woking on Sunday, helping the club to a creditable fourth
place against very strong opposition. Gemma finished her U13 girls’ race in a time
of 03:58.3, shaving two seconds off her record, set three weeks ago at Tilsley Park,
Abingdon. But even that was not enough to win the race: Southampton athlete Abbie
Fisher beat her by a second. Both times put the pair in the top bracket for their
age in the country. MADJA finished behind Southampton, Woking and Oxford, and ahead
of Slough and Newbury. Marlborough’s U13 and U15 boys both won their age groups.
Notable performances in the U13 came from Peter Booten in the javelin, with a throw
of 32.98m, and Henry Williams in the shot, with a throw of 7.96m. In the U15, Brad
Hill was a comfortable winner in the long jump, with a leap of 5.59m, Matthew Williams
won the high jump with 1.65m and William Seward’s throw of 34.82m in the javelin
was two metres further than his nearest rival. In the U17 men’s 800m, Ben Davies
finished 20 seconds ahead of the second-

Marlborough’s young athletes got their season off to a flying start at Andover on Sunday, coming second in the year’s first Wessex League match.
Competing against six teams in age groups of U13 to U20, MADJA notched up 423 points, behind Team Kennet (495) and ahead of Andover (349) in third. If MADJA can keep up the good form, the club is on course to beat last season’s final position of third in a league of 18, which includes big city clubs such as Oxford and Southampton. MADJA also finished second in the parallel QuadKids U11 competition, only yielding the top spot to the much bigger club of Slough.
With every performance gaining points for the club, MADJA fielded athletes in all disciplines and at all levels. Peter Booten was the pick in the U13B, winning the javelin with a throw that puts him among the best in the country in his age group and coming joint first in the 100m. In the high jump, Annabel Nichols performed well for the girls in the U15G and Matty Williams won the U15B, with a jump of 1.55m. Rachel Sykes won the U17W 1500m in 5m 12.7 secs. Both the U13 boys and the U17 women won their groups.
Several MADJA athletes excelled in the four Quadkids events of 75m sprint, 600m, long jump and vortex throw: for the boys, Jacob Smith finished third, Gregory Rogan Rea fourth and James Richardson sixth, while Harriet Hanscomb Davies was fifth in the girls’ event. MADJA’s strength at Quadkids level puts the club in great shape for the future.

Marlborough and District Junior Athletics club (MADJA) members are preparing for
the new season, having recently performed well in the Oxford Mail Cross Country League
series. Notable cross country performers for the club were Elliot Lassiter (11) and
Amy Cooper (U13) who missed out on a maiden win in the first of the five winter fixtures
by just half a yard. The cross country success came hot on the heels of some great
performances at major pentathlon and heptathlon events at the end of last season.
Ben Davies (U15), Hannah Claydon (U17) and Lucy Averill, Chris Claydon and Hannah
Thompson (all U20) represented Wiltshire in the English Schools multi-
