MATCH REPORTS - SUMMER 2011

4 September 2011

More than 80 athletes aged seven to 17 flocked to the Marlborough College track on Sunday for Marlborough and District Junior Athletics club’s end-of-season event.

The U11s divided into six teams for the QuadKids event, featuring long jump, 75m sprint, vortex throw and 600m, followed by a relay.

The winning team, with 908 points, was captained by Jessica Lamb and featured Oliver Allen, Matthew Stevenson, Lily Jackson, Mae Allen, Evie Williams and Daniel Saunders. Lamb was the top-ranked girl, finishing with 166 points.

In second, with 871 points, was the team captained by Emma Sykes, which included Lucas Arkwright, the top-ranked athlete with 225 points. In third place was the team captained by Katie McQue with 846 points.

Competition was fierce in the senior event (U13 and above), with just 18 points separating the top three teams.

After all the athletes had completed four events – 100m, long jump, 800m and vortex – it all came down to the relay. James’ Giants, named after captain James Green, emerged victorious, winning the event with 1621 points. The team comprised Green, Amy Cooper, Oscar Bruce, Eve Tarring, Callum Short, Elliot Lassiter and Olivia Halpin.

In second place were Rachel’s Rambos (1605 points) and third were Callum’s Crusaders (1603), who included the number one male and female athletes, Callum Rea (383) and Hattie Collquhoun (270).

The event was the last one in MADJA’s summer season, in which the club won the Super8 league and came 10th out of 18 in the Wessex league.

4 July 2011

The U17 men were on sparkling form for Marlborough and District Junior Athletics club in their Wessex league match at Camberley on Sunday, but it was not enough to stop the home team cantering to victory.

Camberley, fielding a small army of athletes, amassed 489 points, followed by Slough (351), MADJA (321), Portsmouth (246) and New Forest (91).

Leading the way for MADJA's U17 boys, who won their age group, were Will Seward, whose javelin throw of 47.74m - a grade 2 performance - was more than eight metres further than his nearest rival, and Rory Davis in the 100m: his time of 11.7secs was a new club record.

James Green won the 800m with a PB of 2:11.5, while Ben Davies won the high jump with a leap of 1.80m.

MADJA's U15 boys were also on fine form, finishing second in their age group behind Camberley. Ben Holland won the long jump with a distance of 4.79m and Henry Williams tied for first place in the shot with a putt of 9.32m.

For the U15 girls, Maddie Perrins cruised to victory in the 1500m in 5:07.7, Amy Cooper won the 300m in 45.0secs and Georgina Cooper's winning shot putt of 8.91m was a grade 3 performance.

The top-ranked girl was Jessica Lamb, who came 13th.

27 June 2011

Three Marlborough and District Junior athletes finished on the podium at the South West Multi-Event championships in Exeter on Saturday, the club's best-ever result at this highly competitive and prestigious event.

Amy Cooper was second in the junior girls pentathlon, Callum Rea was third in the senior boys decathlon and Ben Davies was third in the inter boys octathlon. All three scored big personal bests in the process.

Their success means that each of the trio will go to the national finals at Exeter in September.

Amy Cooper said after the event that she was both very satisfied and frustrated, as she missed out on first place by just 22 points, eventually losing to Shannon Robertson from Devon by 2730 points to 2708.

Callum Rea could barely walk after a heroic final event, the 1500m, in which he overtook the points tally of Devon's Ben Thompson to claim third place overall.

Also competing for MADJA were: Joe Williamson, in the junior boys pentathlon, who finished fifth; Brad Hill and Luke Callaghan in the inter boys pentathlon, who finished seventh and 10th respectively; and Hannah Claydon, in the senior girls heptathlon, who finished seventh.
